The Howling Wolf

Just as our wolf logo symbolizes the leadership, loyalty, strength of character and sense of family that is displayed by emergency responders, The Howling Wolf serves as the voice of the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund. A wolf’s howl attracts other members of the pack, invites communication and creates a strong bond between pack members. We hope this blog will have the same impact on emergency responders, workplace safety professionals and traffic safety advocates, bringing us all together in the same pack and providing valuable information about workplace safety issues affecting first responders.

Check in frequently for updates on JPMF events and initiatives, interesting research and to add your own howl to our pack.

Getting into the swing of things

Volunteer season is upon us at the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund.

We have three major fundraising events coming up in August and September and they all require the help of volunteers.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up. Please let us know if you can help and if you can’t, help us spread the word!

The tournament takes place on Friday, Aug. 18th at River Spirit Golf Club and we need helpers for morning and afternoon shifts.

The morning shift runs from 7 am until 1 pm and the afternoon shift starts at noon and ends around 6 pm.

Volunteers will set up off the greens of par 3 holes, where they will watch for hole-in-ones – big prizes are up for grabs for any golfer who makes a hole-in-one.

JPMF helpers will also sell raffle tickets and 50/50 tickets to the golfers.

Dress for this event is casual and volunteers are asked to be prepared for a variety of weather conditions: please bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray and a foldable chair. Food and beverages are complimentary for volunteers, who are also welcome to stay for a warm meal at the luncheon/banquet following their shift. In addition, volunteers can use the driving range free of charge when their shift is complete.

We will be operating a stand at the Shaw Charity Classic golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 2nd at Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club.

Helpers are needed at the popular tournament to cook, sell and serve food and beverages to golf fans from 9 am until 4 pm.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. A volunteer orientation meeting will take place at 10 am, Aug. 26th at the golf course.

Our next casino event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 26th and Wednesday, Sept. 27th at Casino Calgary.

This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and we will need dozens of volunteers to help out so let us know if you can make it!

Here’s what you need to know about the event:

  • WHEN: Sept. 26-27, 2017
  • SHIFT TIMES: Day shifts are 10:30 am-7 pm; Night shifts are 6 pm-3 am; Count room shifts are 10 pm-3 am
  • WHERE: Casino Calgary, 1420 Meridian Rd NE (southeast of 16 Ave. and Barlow Trail NE)
  • ATTIRE: Dress is casual – feel free to wear jeans
  • WHY: This is our biggest fundraiser of the year!
  • PERKS: All volunteers are eligible to receive a free meal at the casino restaurant, in addition to complimentary snacks and beverages

All of these events are volunteer-driven – we are unable to participate if we don’t get enough volunteer help so please help us if you can!

Contact JPMF Managing Director Ian Wilson at to help out or find out more about each event.
