The Howling Wolf

Just as our wolf logo symbolizes the leadership, loyalty, strength of character and sense of family that is displayed by emergency responders, The Howling Wolf serves as the voice of the John Petropoulos Memorial Fund. A wolf’s howl attracts other members of the pack, invites communication and creates a strong bond between pack members. We hope this blog will have the same impact on emergency responders, workplace safety professionals and traffic safety advocates, bringing us all together in the same pack and providing valuable information about workplace safety issues affecting first responders.

Check in frequently for updates on JPMF events and initiatives, interesting research and to add your own howl to our pack.

Alberta Hotel Partner Needed for Police Award

The John Petropoulos Memorial Fund (JPMF) will soon be handing out awards to two exemplary Calgary Police Service (CPS) constables.

We recognize police officers annually with the John Petropoulos Leadership Award because we feel it’s important to honour the vital work they do and reward them for a job well done.

The award is given to one CPS constable from District 6 (where John Petropoulos worked as a constable), as well as a constable in District 1 each year. It recognizes a recipient who displays those attributes that John himself demonstrated – integrity, dedication to police work, commitment to excellence, courage and honour.

The prize includes a cash prize and a stay at a hotel. Those two elements are important because we want the winners to take time with their families and loved ones to enjoy a much-needed break from the stresses of police work.

“It should come as no surprise that policing is stressful. It can be physically, mentally, emotionally and psychologically draining,” said JPMF Board Chair Maryanne Pope.

“Our intention with the John Petropoulos Leadership Award, in addition to preserving the proud legacy of Constable John Petropoulos, is to offer up an opportunity to officers to recharge and take advantage of time with friends and family. It is a relatively small token of our appreciation of first responders and the challenging work they do.”

The award has been offered since 2001 and this year will mark the 25th time a constable has been recognized by the JPMF.

In that time, several hotels have partnered with us to offer a relaxing getaway to the winners, including the Delta Lodge in Kananaskis and the Chateau Lacombe Hotel in Edmonton.

“We are incredibly thankful for the support we have received in offering this reward in the past, but we are currently at a point where we have no hotel partners in place,” said JPMF Managing Director Ian Wilson.

“The requirements of our hotel partners are simple. We only need two hotels to help us. Each hotel has the choice of offering up a one or two night stay at their property to our award winner.”

Partners will be recognized on our website and thanked via social media on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.

Meanwhile, financial support of the award is also greatly appreciated.
